The Complete Deadpool and Wolverine Movie Review is Here!

It’s the Marvel comeback movie. That’s the first thing that comes to my mind. It probably comes to the minds of every Marvel fan who has been desperately hoping for Marvel to bounce back. Deadpool and Wolverine (or Deadpool 3, if you want to put it like that) is the drop of water in a very parched desert of the MCU. People had started to think Marvel would never bounce back (I mean, come on! Everyone goes through a bad ‘phase’. In this case, “Phase 4”! 😅) But Marvel was bound to be back. It was just a question of when. And the when is what Deadpool and Wolverine is.

So, how did the movie fare on the Marvel movie likeness scale?

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD. DON’T READ FURTHER IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW HOW AWESOME THE MOVIE IS OR WANT TO AVOID DEETS ABOUT OTHER MARVEL MOVIES!

The Merc with the Mouth, A Verryyy Big Mouth!

Deadpool

Ryan Reynolds has owned the role of Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool. It’s similar to how you find that one dress in the market and go, “This is exactly what I wanted!” When I saw Deadpool for the first time in Deadpool (2016), I was blown away by Ryan’s wit and spontaneity. No matter how much acting experience you have or what acting school you went to, you can’t develop skills like that. It has to come from within, which is the case with Ryan.

Funnily, some people may be right in asking, “Is it Ryan Reynolds that plays Deadpool in reel life or Deadpool that plays Ryan Reynolds in real life?”

Deadpool’s range of super-descriptive insults (to both his enemies and his friends) is filled with expletives one cannot even put together in a million years. They’re so hilarious that it takes time to process them completely. Some are so memorable that you keep remembering those dialogues in your mind and keep laughing again and again.

Right from the start, he kick-starts the film in his signature fourth-wall-breaking style. He narrates the Disney-Fox issues and how Marvel approached him because they wanted him. Then, he goes on to use the adamantium skeleton of the Wolverine that died in Logan (2017), dishonouring his memory as he promised. But in the process, he made a new favourite opening scene. The scene involves fighting and killing the people from the Time Variance Authority (TVA) against the background score of “Bye Bye Bye” by NSYNC.

Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine vs Deadpool in His Own Series

Wolverine standing over Deadpool

When I saw Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), I thought he was just another mutant. Little did I know that the character had such a large scope to be explored if only the right actor was given the creative freedom to justify the character.

What Tim Miller started by directing the first instalment of the franchise has now grown into a full-grown franchise (for someone who shouldn’t even get his own movie, in the titular character’s own words). And we are loving it!

In X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Wade Wilson was introduced as a member of the team assembled by Colonel William Stryker (played by Danny Huston) to take on missions that required special people like mutants. So, he didn’t really get to shine as much, but he sure stood out even among that crowd with his quips, incessant talking and freakish sword-swinging skills to deflect bullets.

After he got his own standalone movie, Ryan took all the best parts of the character and really let them out the floodgates for everyone to witness. Sometimes, we witnessed too much, but okay. We’ll let it slide for the sheer fun we have while watching him!

We Love Hugh Jackman as the Wolverine!

Wolverine's claws

It’s true. When I went to see Logan (2017) on the big screen, I came out with a heavy heart, knowing I’d only be able to relive the memories of seeing Hugh Jackman playing ‘the X-Man’ in Logan and the movies before. Little did I know that all it needed to bring him back onto the screen was a big bag of Marvel cash (Deadpool’s words, not mine!).

Jokes aside, there’s no one better than Hugh Jackman who can play Wolverine, just like no one else can play Tony Stark or Iron Man better than Robert Downey Jr. The sheer commitment that Hugh Jackman has shown to this beloved Marvel character over the years has cemented his image in my mind as the person who comes up when you think ‘Wolverine’.

Sometimes, it seems that Hugh Jackman is not acting as per the Wolverine attributes mentioned in Marvel comics but rather is showing how the Wolverine should be portrayed in the comics. The ‘I don’t care’ attitude, the pure animal instinct when it comes to fights, the tendency to behave like a coconut with his near ones (hard on the outside and soft on the inside) – all these put together make Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of the Wolverine one of the most memorable Marvel superheroes of all time.

It was like a dream come true to see Hugh play the Wolverine after so many years. Enjoyed every bit of it!

The Stellar Cast of Deadpool Cameos in Deadpool and Wolverine

Deadpool and Wolverine cameo stars

The cameos in Deadpool and Wolverine were beyond wild! For characters that belong to the Marvel comics and had their own movies but were forgotten, this was an incredible way to reminisce in nostalgia. Seeing Elektra (played by Jennifer Garner), Blade (played by Wesley Snipes), Gambit (played by Channing Tatum), Laura aka X-23 (played by Dafne Keen), and Johnny Storm (played by Chris Evans) was just OMG!!!

It was also fun to see Happy Hogan (played by Jon Favreau) back as the chauffeur…sorry, Head of Security. Brings back Iron Man memories.

I sincerely hope that some of these characters are included in the MCU going forward, but that chance is quite small because of what they’re doing to the budget! Just look at what they did to Johnny. However, it was a treat to watch all these characters after so long and I’m happy that they were remembered again (I wish Channing Tatum’s ‘Gambit’ had been made. Would have loved to see it).

In ‘The Void’, they also brought back some familiar faces like Pyro (played by Aaron Stanford in X2 (2003) and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)), Toad (played by Daniel Medina Ramos in this movie) and Sabertooth (played by Tyler Mane in X-Men (2000)). I’m probably missing many more cameos. Sorry for that but I don’t remember all of them.

The different comic-accurate versions of the Wolverine were another highlight of the movie. And among those versions: the Cavillerine! Henry Cavill. Oh my! Looks like the perfect man to carry on the Wolverine’s legacy in the MCU because even though Disney wants to make Hugh Jackman do his Wolverine thing till he’s 90, his physical limits won’t allow him to do so.

Best Deadpool and Wolverine Scenes

Deadpool and Wolverine jumping through a portal

Oh, man, where do I start with this list? Can I start listing the scenes from the previous movies that led to the scenes in this movie? Actually, let’s leave that part for the other reviews.

Here are my top picks for the best scenes of Deadpool and Wolverine (again, very difficult choice since there are so many more):

  1. When Deadpool digs up Wolverine’s grave, sits beside his adamantium skeleton and says, “Look, I’m not a man of science, but you seem incredibly passed away.” That cracked me up!
  2. The opening scene with “Bye Bye Bye”. Has to be one of the best movie openings. Loved the dance.
  3. Henry Cavill as the Wolverine. Epic.
  4. The little actions in the background that Deadpool does. Like making a heart with his hands when Johnny Storm pulls back his hood, or when he hits the blade stuck in Wolverine, making it wobble. Amusing details that you probably missed at first (I did!).
  5. Chris Evans shouting “Flame On!” instead of the expected “Avengers, assemble!” So surprising and good.
  6. When Deadpool talks to Blade, and Blade says he doesn’t like him, to which Deadpool replies, “You never did.” This was a reference to Blade: Trinity (2004), in which both Wesley Snipes and Ryan Reynolds were together.
  7. ‘Deadpool Prime’ deliberately puts ‘Nicepool’ in front of him, then tries to resuscitate him by giving him chest compressions after his head’s been blown off and says, “I don’t think he’s gonna make it” while blood splatters out of the place where his neck was.
  8. When Deadpool shows us the video of all the things Johnny Storm said about Cassandra Nova (played by Emma Corrin) while being carried as a prisoner along with Deadpool and Wolverine by Pyro.

The Verdict on Deadpool and Wolverine

In the end, I would say that Marvel’s Deadpool and Wolverine’s storyline was extremely entertaining, filled with humour throughout, great fight scenes and the most epic line of cameos! However, the storyline could have been a little better with more depth. Having said that, this is a great, great comeback for Marvel and I hope they continue this trend.

Also, it was tremendously difficult for me to write this review without any expletives. Tremendously.
